FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE TO DOMINATE PM’S AGENDA DURING ABU DHABI VISIT

Prime Minister Imran Khan will arrive in the UAE today, a highlyplac­ed official in Pakistan’s Ministry of Informatio­n told Gulf News.

The official said Imran will be in Abu Dhabi to meet the UAE leadership and seek financial assistance as part of his continuous campaign to salvage Pakistan’s economic situation.

The prime minister, who will be here for the second time in two months, and his economic team are expected to hold meetings with the UAE leadership and officials, the official confirmed.

Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi has already arrived in the UAE and he held a meeting with his UAE counterpar­t, Shaikh Abdullah Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, on the sidelines of the 9th Sir Bani Yas Forum in Abu Dhabi yesterday.

Details of the agreements between the UAE and Pakistan are likely to be announced today.

Last month, Qureshi said that Pakistan had requested a Saudi Arabia-like deal from the UAE to stabilise the economy.

He said Islamabad had urged the friendly country to provide a “fiscal space” to Pakistan amid the economic crises.

Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan is coming to the UAE today for the second time in two months. The PM and his economic team are expected to hold meetings with the UAE leadership and officials, the ministry official confirmed. Details of the agreements between the UAE and Pakistan are likely to be announced today.

Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Shah Mahmoud Quraishi has already arrived in the UAE. He held a meeting with his UAE counterpar­t, Shaikh Abdullah Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, on the sidelines of the 9th Sir Bani Yas Forum in Abu Dhabi yesterday.

During the meeting, Quraishi raised the issue of a “financial package”, the official said.

Shaikh Abdullah visited Pakistan earlier this month as part of the ongoing talks with Islamabad over economic issues, a top official told Gulf News.

Imran Khan is also scheduled to visit Malaysia on Tuesday to discuss economic cooperatio­n with Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohammad.

Pakistan is expecting a financial package from the UAE to tide over its current economic crisis.

Last month, Quraishi had said that Pakistan had requested for a Saudi Arabialike deal from the UAE to stabilise its economy.

Provision of ‘fiscal space’

He said Islamabad had urged the friendly country to provide a “fiscal space” to Pakistan amid economic crises.

A high-level UAE delegation comprising senior officials of major UAE-based companies had met the Pakistan foreign minister last month.

Today’s visit is a follow-up of the Pakistan prime minister’s official visit to Abu Dhabi on September 19 and his understand­ing with His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Abu Dhabi Crown Prince and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, to forge closer ties between the two countries in all areas of mutual interest.
