Saudi Arabia reports 2,509 new infections

Kuwait tally climbs to 16,764 with 1,073 new Covid-19 cases

Saudi Arabia reported 2,509 new cases of coronaviru­s, bringing the total number of infections in the country to 59,854, the Ministry of Health announced yesterday.

Meanwhile, the ministry reported 2,886 recoveries, with total recoveries in the kingdom at 31,634. There are 251 cases in intensive care.

The ministry also confirmed 9 deaths, bringing the total number of deaths in the kingdom to 329.

The Saudi Interior Ministry said yesterday that deliberate transmitte­rs of the infection face up to five years in prison or a fine of maximum 500,000 riyals (Dh488,155) or both — penalties that will double in case of repetition.

Cases in Kuwait

Kuwait yesterday confirmed 1,073 new cases of the novel coronaviru­s, continuing an upward curve, taking the country’s infection tally to 16,764, according to the official news agency KUNA.

All the new cases were in touch with previously infected people or are being investigat­ed for sources of infection, the Health Ministry’s spokesman Dr Abdullah Al Sanad said.

He also announced three new deaths from Covid-19, bringing Kuwait’s total fatalities to 121.

Meanwhile, Oman yesterday confirmed 292 further cases of the new coronaviru­s, taking to 5,671 the country’s overall infections, the Health Ministry said.

The newly diagnosed cases include 119 Omanis and 173 foreigners, the ministry said without giving a breakdown of foreign patients’ nationalit­ies.

A 57-year-old resident died of Covid-19, bringing to 26 the overall such fatalities in Oman, the ministry said.

Oman this week tightened precaution­s to stem the spread of the coronaviru­s, including banning all gatherings during the Eid Al Fitr holiday, and warned violators of jail time and fines.

Qatar’s Ministry of Public Health has announced another 1,637 new coronaviru­s cases in the past 24 hours, taking the overall number of confirmed infections in the country to 35,606, Qatar News Agency reported yesterday.

No new deaths were reported, keeping the death toll at 15. Meanwhile, 735 Covid-19 patients have recovered fully, taking the total number of recovered patients to 5,634.

Qatar has conducted a total of 166,182 coronaviru­s tests, after 4,487 new tests were done over the past 24 hours.

Over 2,000 cases in Iran

Iran yesterday reported no new coronaviru­s deaths in nearly a third of its provinces for 24 hours but said there

were more than another 2,100 cases of infection nationwide.

The virus spread rapidly to all 31 of Iran’s provinces soon after the country’s first cases — two deaths in the holy city of Qom — were announced three months ago.

“Ten provinces have reported zero deaths in the past 24 hours and six others only one,” said health ministry spokesman Kianoush Jahanpour.

Curbs relaxed in Palestine

Palestinia­n authoritie­s have decided to relax part of the anti-coronaviru­s measures that have been imposed in the West Bank since March 5.

The decision came as seven new cases of Covid-19 were recorded in the Palestinia­n territorie­s on Monday night, Xinhua News Agency quoted Health Minister Mai Al Kaila as saying.

Al Kaila said that the number of Covid-19 cases has reached 391, while 108 were still receiving medical treatment.
