Saudi Arabia reports highest single day death toll: 30 in 24 hours

KINGDOM STEPS UP CRACKDOWN ON BUSINESSES FLOUTING COVID-19 RULES

Saudi Arabia reported 2,171 new cases of coronaviru­s, bringing the total number of infections in the country to 91,182, the Ministry of Health announced yesterday.

Meanwhile, the ministry reported 2,369 recoveries yesterday, with total recoveries in the kingdom at 68,159. There are 1,321 critical cases according to ministry.

The ministry also confirmed 30 deaths, its highest singleday spike in Covid-19 deaths, taking the toll to 579.

Saudi authoritie­s have also stepped up a crackdown on businesses breaking rules in place to limit the spread of the new coronaviru­s, as the kingdom is going ahead with a plan for gradual return to normal life.

The municipal authoritie­s in Jeddah in western Saudi Arabia have closed down 71 stores, including restaurant­s and grocery shops over the past two days for failing to observe precaution­s to fight the virus, Saudi online newspaper Sabq reported, citing a local official.

Meanwhile, Qatar reported 1,901 new coronaviru­s cases, raising the country’s total number of infections to 62,160, the Ministry of Public Health announced.

Two more people have also died from the Covid-19 virus, taking the total number of fatalities to 45. The deceased are two expatriate men aged 53 and 48, who died due to medical complicati­ons caused by the virus. The ministry also revealed the recovery of 1,506 patients over the past 24 hours, bringing the total recovered cases to 37,542.

Qatar is now at the peak of the coronaviru­s outbreak, as it has been seeing a rise in the number of the daily reported. The ministry highlighte­d the necessary for people to adhere more than ever to preventive measures and recommende­d social distancing measures to help curb the spread of the virus.

Kuwait has recorded 710 new cases, raising the country’s infection tally to 29,359, the Kuwaiti news agency KUNA reported.

The Health Ministry also announced four more deaths, taking the total such fatalities in the country to 230.

Oman has confirmed 738 new cases, raising to 13,538 the country’s overall infections, the Omani news agency ONA reported yesterday.

The newly diagnosed cases include 324 Omanis and 414 foreign residents, the Health Ministry said without giving a breakdown of foreign patients’ nationalit­ies. The ministry also reported eight new deaths.
