7 NEW METRO STATIONS WILL OPEN TO PUBLIC IN SEPTEMBER

Route 2020 will serve 270,000 residents in Jebel Ali, The Gardens, Discovery Gardens, Al Furjan, Jumeirah Golf Estates, Dubai Investment Park, Expo site

Dubai yesterday announced that the Dh11 billion Route 2020 — the extension to its metro rail network — will open to public in September.

“Route 2020 opens to the public this September and will serve 270,000 people,” Dubai’s media office tweeted after its formal inaugurati­on by His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. “The UAE has exceptiona­l goals and ambitions. Today, we are moving with confidence, determinat­ion and a clear vision to attain the highest levels of excellence in various fields,” Shaikh Mohammad said.

Vital future link

The track of Route 2020 extends 15km and links seven stations. The project offers safe and smooth transport for Expo visitors and residents of Dubai communitie­s. It is also viewed as a vital future link between Dubai communitie­s and Al Maktoum Internatio­nal Airport.

Route 2020 will serve the residents in Jebel Ali, The Gardens, Discovery Gardens, Al Furjan, Jumeirah Golf Estates, Dubai Investment Park and the Expo 2020 site.

Expo 2020 Station’s unique design

Shaikh Mohammad and the entourage toured Jebel Ali Station, an interchang­e station with a total capacity of 320,000 riders per day. The Expo 2020 Station boasts of a unique design featuring the wings of an aircraft, signifying Dubai’s future drive towards greater innovation.

522,000 riders a day

Shaikh Mohammad toured the station which spans 18,800 square metres in area, with a total capacity of 522,000 riders per day in both directions at a rate of 29,000 riders per hour in both directions. The station has three passenger platforms and three routes.

His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, yesterday rode a new metro train from Jebel Ali station to the Expo 2020 station, whose design is inspired by the wings of an aircraft, signifying Dubai’s unending quest for innovation.

He toured the station, which spans 18,800 square metres, and has a daily capacity of 522,000 riders. The station has three passenger platforms and three routes. It is linked on the eastern side with the Expo exhibition and Expo COEX, and on the western side with the Expo Mall and urban complex.

Shaikh Mohammad unveiled the memorial of Expo 2020 station, an artwork inspired by the phrase ‘I believe in God’ written in Arabic and taken from his poem The Beginning of the Fifty.

The memorial, designed by the internatio­nal artist El Seed, is decorated in blue to match the predominan­t colour of the station. It measures 1.5x3.5 metres and is placed on a 1x4 metre base.

The selection of the colour blue symbolises stability, loyalty, trust, intelligen­ce and peace. Shaikh Mohammad also posed for a photograph with the project team supervisin­g the constructi­on of Route 2020.
