Veteran journalist Al Abed was a pioneer ofUAEmedia

79- YEAR- OLDWAS ADVISER TO CHAIRMAN OF THE NATIONAL MEDIA COUNCIL

Veteran Emirati journalist Ebrahim Al Abed, adviser to the chairman of the National Media Council ( NMC), died yesterday after 42 years of devoted work in the UAEmedia industry. Hewas 79.

He also contribute­d to establishi­ng the Emirates news agency ( WAM) in 1977.

In a tribute on Twitter, His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, VicePresid­ent and PrimeMinis­ter of UAE and Ruler of Dubai, hailed Al Abed as one of the pioneers of the UAE media.

His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Abu Dhabi Crown Prince and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, also tweeted saying Al Abed was a pillar of themediawh­o devoted his life to serve the Emiratimed­ia for nearly five decades.

Rich tributes

The Ministry of Presidenti­al Affairs also expressed its condolence­s. “In hearts that believe in God’s judgment and destiny, the Ministry of Presidenti­al Affairs mourns the late Ibrahim Al Abed, who passed away today,” it said.

In a tweet, Abdul Hamid Ahmad, CEO, Editor- in- Chief and Executive Director Publicatio­ns,

Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid and Shaikh Mohammad Bin Zayed paid heartfelt tributes to Ebrahim Al Abed on Twitter, hailing his dedication to building the UAE’smedia landscape.

Gulf News, said: “Today we lost a teacher, a friend and a brother who had unforgetta­ble fingerprin­ts on our media, he participat­ed in the establishm­ent and developmen­t together. Rest in peace Ebrahim Al Abed. Your media family will miss you and your support and guidance.”

Known for his profession­alism, Al Abed played a major role in shaping the UAE media landscape throughout his long and close associatio­n with the industry, and had close ties with UAE leaders.

42- year career in media

He worked closely with Shaikh Abdullah Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, who was NMC’s first chairman, and then with Saqr Ghobash and Shaikh Hamdan

Bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, and later with Dr Sultan Al Jaber.

Al Abed worked hard to develop the UAE media space, especially in the early days of the UAE’s foundation. Throughout his 42- year career, Al Abed continued to demonstrat­e his passion for the field and his keenness to remain abreast with the changing times.

He remained faithful to journalism and its ethics, inspired by the principle laid down by Shaikh Zayed on establishi­ng a conciliato­ry and interactiv­e media that serves the goals of the nation and its future.

With a high sense of profession­alism and morale, Al Abed represente­d the true pulse of the generation of the Union, witha conscience that saidmedia is a constructi­ve tool, and a source of awareness in society.
