Mullane claims amateur crown

19-year-old wins by one from the fast finishing Oliver Ravenscrof­t

Sam Mullane (JGE) shot a second round five over par 77, for a 36 hole total of two over par 146, to win the 2023 Emirates Amateur Open at Emirates Golf Club.

The second round was played over the Majlis Course in a walking format.

After a first round of 69 on Day 1 over the Faldo Course, Mullane took a two-shot lead into the second round.

Mullane, 19 years-old plays off a +3 handicap, played the front nine in 40 shots with five bogeys and four pars.

He then responded with birdies on holes 10 and 11, the latter with a six iron and a 25 foot holed putt that settled him down.

This was then followed with six solid pars and a double on the 36th hole to win by one from the fast finishing Oliver Ravenscrof­t who birdied the home hole for a second round of 76 and total of 147.

Best gross of the second day over the Majlis Course was by Max Burrow (Dubai Creek) with a one under par score 71.

Delighted with win

On finishing his round Mullane commented, ‘I am delighted to win this prestigiou­s tournament to go along with my victory in the Saadiyat Beach Men’s Open in 2021.’

Mullane will next play in the 54 hole Waldorf Astoria Ras Al Khaimah Championsh­ip at Al Hamra Golf Club, Ras Al Khaimah on January 20-22.

In tied third place were three players: Joe Jones (England), 13 year-old Louis Klein (Czech Republic) and Simon Dunn (Tower Links) on four over par for 36 holes, with all three shooting second round 75’s.

Best gross of the second day over the Majlis Course was by Max Burrow (Dubai Creek) with a one under par score 71, with a strong finish of birdies on holes 16 and 17 and a par at the last, to finish tied 10th overall.

The event was sanctioned by the Emirates Golf Federation (EGF) and was a Qualifying Event for the 2022-2023 EGF Men’s Order of Merit.

In the Net Division DorinMirel Mateiu (EGC) shot a net 145, receiving nine shots today and eight shots yesterday, to take the title by one shot.

The tournament was sponsored by Suited and Booted.
