Accident victim with multiple facial fractures smiles again
Doctors in Dubai perform complex surgery to rebuild 37-year-old’s face
Doctors at Aster Hospital, Mankhool, have successfully rebuilt the face of a 37-year-old man who suffered multiple complex facial bone fractures in a road accident.
Mohammad Thausif Kaiyoor Abdulla Kaiyoor, working at Aster Pharmacy, was severely injured and his face left unrecognisable. Aster doctors rebuilt it using specialised oral and maxillofacial surgery.
What happened
Kaiyoor was riding his motorbike, wearing his safety gear (helmet, gloves, elbow and knee pads), when he was struck from behind by a four-wheeler in Sharjah. He was immediately taken to a nearby hospital.
The treatment started with an initial debridement (removal of dead and infected skin tissue) and suturing of the wound on his left thigh under general anaesthesia. Due to the severity of his injuries, he was transferred to Aster Hospital, Mankhool.
Kaiyoor arrived with complaints of severe headache, nasal bleeding, difficulty in opening and closing his mouth, restricted movement of the right eye, and double vision.
Pan-facial fractures, account for 4-10 per cent of all facial fractures. Often caused by highimpact incidents, they present a reconstructive challenge due to their complex nature.
Dr Renju Prem, Specialist, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Aster Hospital, Mankhool, led the multidisciplinary team in developing a comprehensive treatment plan.
“One of the primary concerns with regard to the repair of pan facial fracture is airway management. Once the airway is established, the repair of pan facial injuries follows a systematic approach,” said Dr Prem.
Kaiyoor said: “I am immensely grateful to Dr Prem and the entire medical team ... I have been given a new lease of life and I cannot thank them enough for restoring my health and confidence.”
