BEAUTY AND THE BEAST

- By Manjula Ramakrishnan

Two artists, Bernardo Nieves and Daniela Carletti, have come together to exhibit their work till March 10, 2018 at the Emirates Palace, Abu Dhabi. While Nieves paints “Equus” or horses, Daniela chooses “folium” or nature.

The event is a collaborative effort between Swiss Art Gate UAE, Almira Fine Art and the Emirates Palace.

Bernardo German Nieves is a visual artist, sculptor and designer of urban spaces. “I have been an artist for as long as I can remember, but it was from 1989 that art formally became a true modus vivendi for me,’’ he says.

Daniela Carletti says, “As a child I was good in singing, dancing and drawing. Finally, it was the artistic talent that stayed with me and I have been practising my craft and creativity for two decades now.’’

Nieves speak to Panorama.

Did you discover your inherent artistic talent or did art find you?

As human beings we are curious and restless by nature. Perhaps it is this curiosity that led me to the art studio of an old art teacher who eventually had an indelible impact on my life. His work inspired me to start creating my own, in the hope that it would resonate with people much the same as his does. I discovered how beautiful it was to have the ability to converse with people through expressions, design and colours. When I saw the expressions of joy, approval and astonishment in the eyes of my audience, it unlocked and liberated my soul. Can you elaborate how horses have inspired your work?

The Equus or the horse is a truly noble creature; an icon that from time immemorial has been accompanying man in all his conquests. From noble knights to simple warriors, they all have walked their journeys in the honourable company of their horses. The horse is one of the most studied art icons in the history of art. So I thought why not praise and honour this beautiful animal?

But why the abstract, strange shape of your horses?
