The 71st Cannes Film Festival will see the very best of the film world flock to the Croisette from May 8 to 19. From actors in glamorous gowns to directors promoting their latest works, Cannes is the place to be in May when it comes to the movie industry. This week we take a look at what the film festival will have on offer this year.

Opening the festival will be Competition title Everybody Knows. The Spanish-language drama is directed by Iranian auteur Asghar Farhadi who will be a frontrunner for the prestigious Palme d’or, the highest prize awarded at the festival.

Starring Javier Bardem, Penelope Cruz and Ricardo Darin, the film centres around a family and their move from Buenos Aires to Madrid and the unexpected events that follow.

Another contender for the Palme d’or is 87-year-old director Jean-luc Godard with his latest film Le livre d’image (The

Image of Book). Apparently the movie took almost two years to shoot in various Arab countries including Tunisia. This will be Godard’s eighth entry in Cannes’ main Competition, however he has never won the Palme d’or before.

This year there is only one previous Palme d’or winner competing again. Turkish director Nuri Bilge Ceylan won back in 2014 with Winter Sleep and is back this year with The Wild

Pear Tree. The film explores the story of an aspiring writer who returns to his native village to pursue his ambitions.
