01 AARHUS, DENMARK SUBTERRANEAN GALLERY
Due to open to the public in 2020 is a Dhs152 million expansion to the ARoS Aarhus Art Museum. Schmidt Hammer Lassen Architects and American artist James Turrell have collaborated on the 5000-square metre ‘Next Level’ project, which merges art and architecture into a new civic experience. The new extension will feature a 1200-square metre subterranean gallery, as well as a semi-subterranean art installation which will be known as the Dome. This nine-metretall grassy hill will have a diameter of 40 metres and a circular skylight and has been described by the architects as “one of the most spectacular spaces ever built into an art museum.”
