06 HAMBURG RIGHT NOTE
The Elbphilharmonie is a spectacular glass-panelled concert hall that sits on top of a former warehouse in a recently regenerated part of Hamburg’s old port. Designed by Swiss architects Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron, the complex accommodates a philharmonic hall, a chamber music ball, restaurants, bars, a panorama terrace, apartments and a hotel complete with health and fitness centre plus conference facilities. The concert hall seats an audience of 2100 while the chamber music hall accommodates 550 listeners; both were designed by Japanese acoustician Yasuhisa Toyota in a vineyard style, rather than rectangular shoebox style, and features an impressive customised lighting solution by Zumtobel.
