PILOT PROGRAMME
Multinational computer technology company Dell has launched a pilot programme that showcases the use of packaging trays featuring ocean plastics.
Partner firms intercept discarded plastics in waterways and on shorelines and beaches. These are then processed and refined before this ocean plastic (25%) is mixed with other recycled plastics (75%) and then moulded into new packaging trays for the Dell XPS 13 2-in-1.
The programme – an environmental industry first – aims to keep 7250 kilogrammes of plastic from entering the world’s oceans in 2017.
The company will also include educational information on its packaging to raise global awareness, and action on, ocean ecosystem health solutions.
A recent study reported between 4.8 and 12.7 million tonnes of mismanaged plastic waste entered the ocean in 2010 alone.
