AE7 Covered Ampitheatre
Designed to work in harmony with its environment, this remarkable sci-fi-worthy amphitheatre was inspired by the formation of desert shrubs above the sand dunes, as well as the natural geometry of desert plant life.
The 350-person theatre will host a variety of artistic and lyrical performances from across the region and the world within a year-round artistic and entertainment schedule. It features a full-screen display, as well as service rooms and terraces of varying levels that give different perspectives to the audience. The stage is topped by an open dome that’s also been inspired by sand dunes, bringing a desert colour to the design and providing a breath-taking silhouette.
It’s also been designed with sustainability in mind. Utilising open-air/wind circulation studies, and taking advantage of the comparatively dry desert climate, the amphitheatre is designed to capitalise on passive cooling through shading, and optimal orientation towards prevailing winds, for natural ventilation.
It also features shielded LED fixtures, used on the amphitheatre structure, that are Dark Sky-compliant in order to have minimal impact on wildlife.
The judges were mesmerised by this project, noting how it finds strength in tradition whilst embracing a poetic and futuristic vision, as well as a solid connection with, and love of, nature.
