Maison et Objet’s halls were this year abuzz with accents and people from all over the world, excited about the new offerings

Particularly welcoming were the Luxury Halls, where Luxury Living Group seemed to have even more space than ever and were rolling-out new collections from luxury houses… including Baccarat Maison’s debut collection of furniture, created to complement the company’s traditional crystal ware.

The Portuguese seem to be expanding their ‘ design net’, with more and more companies from the country making their mark.

This year’s show – with its spotlight on up-and-coming new designers and the rise of the Chinese market in general (from the perspective of design, manufacturing and exports) – reaffirmed China’s growing role in the interiors sector.

Over the next few pages you will find my personal selection from Maison & Objet. More items of inspiration can be found on our website – www. identity. ae – and, of course, in the pages of id in months to come…

Roll away

Designed by Claudio Dondoli and Marco Pocci, Boxie by Pedrali is a colourful modular and versatile storage piece that’s comfortable in almost any part of the home - study, bedside or bathroom. It’s also a practical office companion…

Goal!

Nobody can resist twisting the rod of a fussball table, especially Teckell’s Calcio Balilla collection, created by Adriano Design. Always a favourite in the UAE and beyond, the company is renowned for its balanced use of design, elegant materials and technology.

Miami vice

Inspired by the pastel shades of Art Deco hotels, the South

Beach vase from Reflections Copenhagen – available in purple, clear, yellow, white and fuchsia – is the perfect segue into summer.

Up in the clouds

Inspired by Pixar’s short animated film, Partly Cloudy, Circu continues to create the dreamiest bedrooms for babies and little ones. The latest edition to the Cloud collection is this dreamy feminine Cloud bench, perfect for a dreamy mademoiselle…

Comfort zone

Astair, a contemporary interpretation of the classic wing chair by Pierre Charpin for Ligne Roset, offers great comfort through its lumbar cushion, headrest and matching footstool.

Sparking happiness

Designed in collaboration with Sebastian Conran, Kaneko Kohyo’s Wave porcelain from Japan has been designed for the global diner. The highly tactile ceramics, with a playful paper-like pattern and crystalline texture, encapsulate the essence of hand-polished, unglazed pure porcelain.

On the side

Designed by Enrico Pasa for Black Tie, this dramatic India sideboard is the belle of the ball. The high-gloss polyester-finished cabinet door in turquoise adds drama to the piece and contrasts with the other ash veneer doors.

Bauhaus centenary

Celebrating the 100th anniversary of Bauhaus, Alessi has relaunched a number of pieces from its archives, originally created in the 1980s. The anniversary collection includes a Cream set [tray, jug, sugar bowl] created by Marianne Brandt and Helmet Schulze. The centennial collection also includes the iconic steel and brass ashtrays designed by Brandt.

Liquid gold

Designed by Michael Sieger for Sieger by Fürstenberg, these precious champagne goblets, lined with 24-carat gold, are the epitome of the good life… The new cobalt blue Drips & Drops – Sip of Gold collection items are perfect for contemporary living. Each hand-made and hand-painted tumbler, formed from wafer-thin porcelain, is unique. “They express the yearning for unique objects and tangible craftsmanship in a world that’s becoming ever more immaterial,” says Sieger.

High flyer

The skyscrapers of Manhattan were what inspired Japanese-born Keiji Takeuchi when he conceived his latest creation, Highrise, for Ichendorf of Milano. Takeuchi, who was a member of the

id Design Awards Jury in 2018, has launched a set of ultra-fine glasses and jug made with borosilicate. These hand-made and lampworked glasses are similar to the glass beakers used in laboratories. Extremely strong, these glasses are essential yet elegant, and come in a range of six colours.

Bottles up!

The new Cuveè bottle rack from Guzzini has been designed to hold your favourite bottles of champagne as well as regular bottle sizes. Made of clear, white or black acrylic, the bottle stand is a little work of art – even when empty. In the clear acrylic version the bottles seem to float in the air…

Pools of colour

Following their successful debut as prototypes at Salone del Mobile last year, Nendo’s Soft Pond crystal trays for Atelier Swarovski Home are now well into production. These mesmerising, thick, flat-cut, tapered crystal trays are the result of some high-tech applications that create the illusion of a small pond, scooped out and placed on a table-top.

Daily ware

The contrast between the outer sandy matt texture and the smooth glossy surface of these plates adds to their allure. Designed by Shigeichiro Takeuchi, these everyday Moheim stoneware plates are hand-made in Vietnam.
