Confession time… I’ve been secretly hooked to Claire Ptak’s Instagram account ever since the announcement was made that the London-based American baker has been commissioned to make Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s Spring-themed wedding cake.
The sight of three-tier cakes slathered generously with butter cream, and fresh flowers artfully thrown around to resemble a last-minute-thought out design, initially seemed too rustic for a royal wedding; and more like something that would be served at a country-side wedding. But the more I go through the simple but heavenly cake images on Violet Bakery Café’s Instagram, the more impatient I get to see the actual royal wedding cake. The lemon and elderflower cake with butter cream dressing, we have no doubt, will look amazing and taste divine, as Ptak is known to use seasonal and sustainable ingredients to make the most dainty treats at her London cafe. While we feed ourselves a thick wedge of our favourite lemon and caraway seed cake, and dream of spring, our intrepid traveller David Light (who has perfected the art of travelling long–distances in the shortest possible time with minimal official leave!) has made short work of rounding up the 10 perfect Spring break destinations for those lucky enough to take a short holiday right now (Pages 10-11). For the rest of us, stuck in our personal favourite holiday destination (the UAE!) we have so much to look forward to as well. Plus more lemon cake to sample. Spring it on!
