Try indicating for a safer drive

-

Cars weaving in an out of traffic are a common sight on our roads. But when motorists don’t indicate in advance as they switch lanes they are flirting with danger. Accidents happen, more so if safe distances are not maintained by other drivers and speed limits are not adhered to. But it seems drivers, both new and experienced, don’t seem to care about this dangerous practice. Many claim indicating on the roads is a sign that the rider is low on confidence. It’s only for novices, many claim with a shrug. Inconsiderate lane-changing caused 21 per cent of road fatalities in the country last year, according to a report. Many drivers said they do not indicate because they get distracted; others said it is a habit, while some said they don’t indicate in their home countries and hence follow the practice here. There are no fines for these errant motorists, so they know they can get away with it. But that’s no excuse for causing an accident, which could lead to serious injury or even loss of life.

A simple flick of a switch will keep drivers and other road users safe. Drivers not indicating should be treated as violators and fines should be introduced. Authorities would also do well to launch awareness campaigns and increase patrols. Speeding is dangerous, and driving with respect is about letting others know by signaling your intentions on the road. Defensive driving is about getting back to basics. It’s about courtesy. And it starts with switching on that indicator.
