Making summers cooler

The UAE enjoys better accessibility to a wide range of products and services related to air conditioners and cooling devices

The heat wave is slowing taking over the UAE and residents are turning to their trusted air conditioners for comfort and relief.

Luckily, almost every nook and corner of the country is fitted with air conditioners and cooling systems — ranging from shopping malls and markets to public transportation, and even bus stations.

Keeping cool may come with a big utility bill, which is why conscious consumers are on the lookout for efficient appliances that not only use less energy, but are also environmental friendly.

Aside from purchasing new devices, many consumers upgrade their existing products. From cleaning out the system to replacing old wires, air conditioners require maintenance from time to time. These services are provided by specialist companies with years of experience and a record of good results.

Pertinently air conditioners have evolved over the years to incorporate a range of features. Smart innovations include climate control, where the device detects the room temperatures and adjusts the thermostat accordingly, and remote app control, which allows users to switch their devices on or off via their mobile device.

Besides regular functions such as timers, air swing modes and auto-functions, air conditioners come with special filters that trap microorganisms and dusts. This brings a sigh of relief to those with breathing issues or those sensitive to changes in the air. These filters ensure fresh and clean air is circulated.

Finpower, in particular, provides units that feature low height energy recovery ventilators (ERVs). These introduce fresh air by conserving energy and removes odours from different rooms.

The Middle East is prone to high temperatures during summer, which often causes stress on cooling devices, leading to faster breakdown. To tackle this issue, LG recently introduced the Titan Air Conditioner, which features a tropical compressor developed to withstand extreme environments such as high temperatures.

Bin Tamim Electronics, which has been present in the UAE for over 10 years, has been meeting consumers’ needs for cooling systems in major projects across the MENA region. Other companies such as GECO and Motoco also cater to their respective fields.

The UAE, notably in Dubai, serves as an ideal platform for the export and re-export of consumer electronics in the Middle East, thanks to its low import duties. This means better accessibility to a wide range of products and services in air conditioners and cooling devices. Brands from the world over further undergo stringent checks set by authorities that ensure the appliance is genuine and safe for commercial and domestic use.

The Emirates Authority for Standardisation and Metrology (ESMA), a body responsible for developing the country’s standards, specifically takes care of product safety and sustainability.

ESMA recently implemented an Energy Efficiency Standards and Labelling Scheme for Room Air Conditioners, where it defined the Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS), with a similar scheme for lamps and washing machines. Products that do not comply with the MEPS are not approved and will not be accepted for sale in the country.

With such wide variety and adherence to regulations, consumers can rest assured that the purchase of any appliance, notably air conditioners, in the UAE meets optimum world-class standards.
