Charity drive gifts ‘beat the heat’ caps to city labourers

- Ankita Chaturvedi

dubai — When the summer sun beats down on you, there are few better ways to protect your head than with adequate headgear. Taking literal inspiration from the act, 461 volunteers have restarted their annual summer initiative — ‘Share a Cap’ — to aid the thousands of workers on construction sites and road projects.

As the days get hotter in UAE, labourers are struggling with their daily duties in the scorching heat. To protect and save workers from heat exhaustion, these volunteers have started distributing caps, juices and fruit packs to them every Friday.

“To keep in line with their vision of giving back to society, our volunteers make sure that the campaign gives away 200-250 caps every Friday, to the workers. Apart from this, we also distribute cool water bottles, T-shirts and other necessary items. We will continue to find ways to give back to the community. It is important for us to provide and give back to our labour force here in the UAE,” said Lalit Naval, founder of the Share to Care Group, who are behind the ‘Share a Cap’ campaign.

The labourers also shared their happiness on the initiaitve. “We don’t have the luxury of skipping work in the summer, and have to manage work hazards with the heat and humidity levels. We have to wear caps, a hard hat/helmet, and glasses, and our whole body and face is covered to protect us from sun and sand,” a few of them said.

The ‘Share a Cap’ campaign was started four years ago to help labourers cope with the intense summer heat. It starts in the month of April and ends in September. “It’s only a small gesture to give back to the labourers who are doing great job of building our city,” said Komal Hazari, one of the volunteers.

Another volunteer, Vinay Kumar Sadwani, a student, said: “I am happy to make this human connection; it is one of the most precious moments of my life.”
