Bigger fish market in UAQ by year end
umm al quwain — The renovation work of the fish market in the Khor area of Umm Al Quwain will be completed by the end of the year, said a senior official at the UAQ Municipality.
According to Eng Mohammed Nasser, head of engineering affairs at the UAQ Municipality, 65 per cent of the work has been completed and the new fish market will come up at the same place of the old one, after completely removing it.
“The new fish market, which is to be opened from all sides, will have a double-layer heat-proof ceiling,” he said, adding that the floors will be paved with granite whereas the fish display counters will be made of stainless steel.
“Big-size fans will be fixed and a 110sqm shade will be fixed on the area specified for daily fish auctions, which attract crowds of customers even from other emirates.”
He said that the fish market development is meant to cope with the significant growth in fish trade and the expected demand in the future.
“The fish market, built on a total area of 487sqm, comprises 28 shops as well as a special section along the creek for daily public auctions.”
“Some sections and utilities of the Fish Market will be removed and replaced with spacious and better parts whereas more and all new facilities and sections are to be included to meet the consumers’ needs and expectations.”
The new premises will also include 51 counters for selling fish and 13 outlets for selling vegetables and fruits.
These are apart from 51 parking spaces for consumers, he elaborated. “The entire area specified for the auction section will be shaded unlike the previous one which was held in open air.”
Electricity and water supplies will be provided to each and every part of the market to make it up to the latest international standards, Eng Nasser underlined, adding that some areas have been kept empty for future expansions.
“The old premises next to the Fish market, such as the cafeteria and restaurants will be removed, and replaced with new ones for providing better services to our customers.”
