AMAF donates half a million dirhams to UAE widows

- Ahmed Shaaban

dubai — The situation of widows in the UAE has taken a turn for the better with one charitable move by the Awqaf and Minors Affairs Foundation (AMAF). As part of its drive to improve social security and enhance the role of endowments (or Waqf )in sustainable development, AMAF has contributed Dh500,000 to widows here.

The contribution is in execution of the will of the late Ahmad Muhammad Baghlaf, according to Tayeb Al Rais, Secretary General, AMAF.

“The donation cheque has been handed over to the Tarahum Charity Foundation, to be spent on widows who have no income to meet their needs and be able to continue their lives in an honourable way,” said Al Rais.

Widows, having no breadwinners to support them, are among the most vulnerable segments of society, he added. “The kind gesture

will help ease their suffering and fulfil their requirements.” Earlier this month, AMAF had donated Dh200,000 to the Tarahum Charity Foundation to be given to defaulters and those in debt.

“The foundation spares no effort to best manage, develop, invest, protect and care for the endowment funds, and duly disburse their proceeds as per studied plans and enlightened vision,” Al Rais pointed out.

In the case of minors’ affairs, the foundation efficiently invests their money, socially supports, rehabilitates and empowers them, Al Rais underlined. “We are running a number of critical projects,

In another initiative that will aid eligible beneficiaries at their homes, “the beneficiaries include people who are age 60 and above, as well as the widows going through the Idda period (a mandatory waiting period for divorced and widowed women).”

“The initiative is part of our ongoing efforts to interact with widows, and support them as advised by our religion’s principles to enhance social solidarity in our society,” said Khaled Al Thani, AMAF Deputy Secretary General. ahmedshaaban@khaleejtimes.com
