Al Wahda square off against Al Jazira

dubai — Al Wahda will square off against their rivals down the road Al Jazira in the quarterfin­al of the President’s Cup after coming through a tough game against Dibba.

The Clarets hung on to take the tense fixture into extra time before seeing off Dibba 3-1 at the Al Maktoum Stadium, late on Tuesday night.

After both teams were locked goalless after the first half, Dibba took the lead on 55 minutes through their Moroccan midfielder Driss Fettouhi. The penalty was awarded after Al Wahda goalkeeper Adel Al Hosani had brought down Ahmed Ibrahim.

But Al Wahda got back on level terms after Sultan Al Ghafri nullified Dibba’s advantage in the 71st minute. With the stalemate staring at them, the match spilled onto extra time and defender Hamdan Al Kamali gave Al Wahda the lead, just five minutes in.

After that, it was vintage Ismail Matar as the Al Wahda talisman fired home the third, to put the game to bed. Al Wahda will take on Al Jazira on January 4. Meanwhile, 10-man Al Shabab suffered a shock 2-0 defeat to Emirates at the Dubai FC Stadium.

Moroccan midfielder Mourad Batna put the Ras Al Khaimah side ahead on eight minutes after which Sebastian Sacha doubled the lead on 77 minutes.

Al Shabab ended the game with 10 men after Mohamed Marzouk was sent off following a second booking.

Meanwhile, in the other last eight fixtures, Al Wasl, who blanked Bani Yas 2-0 on Monday, will meet Al Sharjah, on January 4

Al Ain, who came through an explosive tussle against archrivals Al Ahli, lock horns with Al Nasr, while Emirates take on Hatta, on January 5.
