Let there be hope, and promises of a better life

-

Welcome 2017. At the stroke of midnight we have left behind a year that was a tumultuous one for many. Of course, we also had our fair share of moments of joy and pride, but the year gone by would mostly be remembered for the sweeping changes it brought among the political and social circles globally. The world at large witnessed a stark rise in populism, xenophobia, protectionism, and intolerance. Globalisation, which was once cheered upon, is become a slur. It is gathering flak from different corners, and being dismissed by many. Voices are raging for nationalism, and more inward-looking policies. Civil wars, and selfish political interests continue to claim innocent lives, and douse hopes and dreams of millions for a secured and stable future. Instability is on the rise. However, thankfully, no such headwinds have impacted the UAE so far. On the contrary, the emirates continues to be a haven of stability in the region and an epitome of a progressive and stable society. The visionary leadership has renewed its pledge for an inclusive society, and time and again remained steadfast to the values of diversity, tolerance and philanthropy. The idea to dedicate 2017 as the ‘Year of Giving’ is in essence a confluence of these core principles, and an attempt to allow these values to flow as a way of life in the emirates.

Today is symbolically a new day. One that allows us to dust off our worries, and leave behind prejudices that fog our outlooks. As we start a fresh chapter with this emblematic change of dates and year, let there be promises of new beginnings. Let there be opportunities to start over; room for humble reflections and learning from yester years. Let it be a time to break old moulds and open minds to different views and fresher perspectives. And most of all, it is important to remember that there can be despair, but we should never let there be a moment of hopelessness. With that note and eternal hope for a stable and a peaceful world, here’s wishing all our readers a happier, and a more peaceful year ahead. Cheers.
