Sikhs hail UAE as they mark gurudwara day

dubai — As a testament to the UAE’s multicultu­ralism and tolerance, the Guru Nanak Darbar Gurudwara in Dubai completed five years on Tuesday. Members of the Sikh community gathered in large numbers at the gurudwara to mark the occasion.

Mirza Al Sayegh, director of the Office of Shaikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai and Minister of Finance, who was the chief guest on the day, said: “I am delighted to be here today on the occasion of fifth anniversar­y of this beautiful place.

“It shows the tolerance we have for each other. The UAE is home to 209 nationalit­ies and we always encourage people to live in peace, harmony and coordinati­on here. I can see women here as well and we should also support them as they are the integral part of the society.”

He hailed the close relationsh­ip between the UAE and India. “India is very dear to us and we hope to make this bond stronger in coming days. Both the countries are heading towards a powerful bond in terms of business and trade”.

He was presented Siripoa (highest honour in Sikh Community) by Baba Sewa Singh, an environmen­talist and educationi­st from India. A well-known Indian painter from Dubai, Surekha Sadana, gifted him a painting.

The function concluded with free meal or langar served at Gurudwara.

Guru Nanak Darbar Gurudwara in Dubai was opened on 17th January 2012. It has emerged as a major tourist destinatio­n in Dubai. Over 4 million people have been served a meal in gurudwara since its inception.
