4 portacabins, car gutted in Dubai worksite fire
dubai – A fire broke out at a Dubai construction site behind Design House Building, off Sheikh Zayed Road, near Media City around 11.40am on Saturday morning.
Four portacabins in Al Soufoh area and a car were gutted in the fire, but no casualties were reported. A temporary engineering office of Al Reem Real Estate Development and Acacia Avenues was also destroyed. The firm was working on the construction of a 22-floor hotel apartment in the area. However, traffic, on both directions, was unaffected.
The operations room of the Dubai Civil Defence received information about the fire, which broke out near Sheikh Zayed Road at 11.47am near Frasier Suites in Media City. Fire brigade teams from Al Qouz and Al Barsha rushed to the site, evacuated the location and prevented the fire from spreading into the neighbouring area.
The firefighters brought the fire under control around 2.25pm.
Mahmood Hamed, spokesperson of the Dubai Civil Defence, told Khaleej Times that no one was injured in the accident.
The police had cordoned off the area and the traffic police closed the road between Pearl Residence and Frasier Suites.
Heavy black smoke was billowing from the area and although firefighters immediately arrived at the site, strong winds prevented them from putting out the blaze faster.
“Smoke is still going around and they’re still blocking the road between Pearl Residence and Frasier Suites. The entire area still smells like smoke,” said a resident who declined to give her name.
After putting out the fire, the cooling operation was continued to prevent the fire from re-igniting.
Once the cooling process is over, the site will be handed over to the forensic experts to determine the cause of fire. Residents took to Twitter to post pictures of the fire as a plume of smoke filled up the sky.
