New subways, intersections to come up in RAK this year

- Ahmed Shaaban

ras al khaimah — The emirate will have a set of new subways and intersections, as well as a new bridge on the arterial RAK International Airport road this year.

Dr Abdullah Belhaif Al Nuaimi, Minister of Infrastructure Development, said the second phase of the Emirates Road expansion will also be completed before the end of this year.

“The new road extension with three lanes on both directions is part of the emirate’s ring road which is scheduled to be completed by the end of this year as per the latest international standards.

“There is also a median island for possible addition of a fourth lane in each direction in the future.”

The road extension project is being completed in different phases, the first of which — 24km long stretch completed at a cost of Dh325 million — is almost complete. “The road will be opened for traffic after the completion of the current phase and introduction of some necessary intersections.”

The work for the second phase, worth Dh69 million, will be completed by the end of this year, Dr Nuaimi said. “The road will be lit in collaboration with the Federal Electricity and Water Authority (Fewa).”

The road links a number of newly built residential areas, such as the Sheikh Khalifa city, Butain Al Samar, Al Hamraniya, Awafi, Al Daqdaqa, Suhaila, Al Seeh and Shamal along with the Sheikh Khalifa Cancer Specialty Hospital.”

The road will also be linked with another road being built between the Shaikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road and the Ittihad Road at the Jazirat Al Hamra area.

“The new road, which will reduce the travel distance and time between the emirate and Dubai and Abu Dhabi, will also help ease road congestion in the busy Al Nakheel business area. Heavy trucks in this area will later be diverted to the new road at the entrance of the Shamal area.”

The minister said that the ministry will also build a new bridge on the RAK International Airport Road in the Suhaila area to ease traffic flow on this arterial road. ahmedshaaban@khaleejtimes.com
