NEW FACES Gen Next is making A mark on the red carpet

As award season comes to an end, we look at the new faces in Hollywood and how these young ones are now ruling the fashion scene

The year’s ultimate winner of the awards season, she scored an Oscar, the Screen Actors Guild and the Golden Globe and was also this year’s biggest winner on the red carpet. Every designer house wanted to dress the 28-year-old. The custommade Valentino the redhead wore at the Golden Globes paid homage to the song,

City of Stars from La La Land. The black, sheer lace corseted Alexander McQueen she choose for the SAG showed her playful side and the fringed Givenchy Haute Couture with its degrade crystal fringe at the Academy was an award-worthy gown by itself. She knows how to mix it up yet keep it glamorous and elegant. Is it time for Cate Blanchett to step down as the reigning queen of the red carpet?

Paris Jackson BALMAIN

The 18-year-old daughter of Michael Jackson made her Grammy debut this year, and proved that she truly is red carpet royalty. Her father was known for his distinct style and love of glamour and she appears to be walking in his shoes. Quite the fashion girl, the multicoloured Balmain dress she wore was the perfect compliment to her body art — Paris likes her tattoos. Paris has already appeared in a photo shoot for Chanel, and the media has been quick to make comparisons with Madonna thanks to her blond hair, strong eyebrows and love of red lipstick. And in the world of modelling, perhaps she is ready to be part of the fashion brat-pack that includes Kylie Jenner, Bella Hadid and Hailey Baldwin. JANELLE moNAE

ELIE SAAB

She picked her films well, appearing in both Hidden Figures and Moonlight. A multi Grammy nominee, Janelle has always been known for being a bit eclectic and enjoys pushing the fashion envelope. While this may have been her Oscar debut, 31-year-old Janelle is no newcomer to the red carpet. There was no question that she wanted to tell the acting world she had arrived in her Elie Saab Haute Couture. A black and white gown with its layers of tulle, beading, complete with jewelled headband, hers was the most dramatic look of this year’s Oscars. Her dress, short crop and complete confidence on the red carpet reminded you of Halle Berry in the year she won the Oscar for best actor. It’s just a matter of time.

Dakota Johnson GUCCI

A key trend on this red carpet has been a more modest approach to fashion. Ruth Negga, Jessica Biel and Dakota Johnson all went for dresses that were both high necked and long sleeved. The daughter of Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson is now the face of Gucci, so her choice of designer was no surprise. The golden gown she chose for the awards appeared to pay homage to the Oscars and was perhaps too covered up for the 27-year-old. But the black and pink strappy gown with low cut neckline was simple yet sophisticated. One of the best after-party Oscar dresses this year, it seems Gucci knew what they were doing, just as Dior knew what they doing when they chose to ally with Jennifer Lawrence five years ago.

Dev Patel BURBERRY

The boy has grown up. Remember 2009, when his debut film Slumdog Millionaire won eight Oscars? With neat, short schoolboy style hair, he wore a shawlcollared tuxedo by Burberry in black, and if it was not for the fact that his then girlfriend Freida Pinto was on his arm, you just might have missed him. This year, he was a nominee himself, as best supporting actor in Lion and he chose Burberry once again. But it was a new story with his messy bed head hair, new toned physique and his white tuxedo. On his arm was his beaming mother Anita Patel, dressed in a black velvet sari. Now that Bradley Cooper is spoken for, there is a spot open for 26-year-old Dev Patel on Hollywood’s most eligible list.
