‘Giving Basket’ to settle debts of inmates

ras al khaimah — As part of the UAE’s Year of Giving initiative­s, the Ras Al Khaimah Police have launched an initiative to help prisoners serving sentences over financial crimes.

The initiative, named ‘Giving Basket’, targets to contribute Dh400,000 to settle the debts of some of the inmates. The beneficiar­ies will be selected after studying the individual cases of inmates.

“The move is in line with the ‘Year of Giving’ initiative, announced by the President, His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan,” said Major-General Ali Abdullah bin Alwan Al Nuaimi, Commander-inChief of the RAK Police.

“The initiative will be conducted in collaborat­ion with two philanthro­pic businessme­n in Ras Al Khaimah, who have agreed to donate Dh200,000 each for this noble cause.”

The kind gesture, to be followed by other initiative­s, will ease the suffering of inmates, and will bring happiness to their family, he added.

“Emirati businessme­n Fahid Al Sherawi and Saeed Al Abedi have decided to be part of this initiative to settle the financial difficulti­es of some inmates in a positive response to the ‘Year of Giving’ initiative.”

A special committee, comprising some RAK officers and dignitarie­s of the local community, has been formed to study the cases of all inmates and find adequate solutions to them.”

The inmates, who have shown good performanc­e in terms of memorisati­on of the Holy Quran, have also been supported and rewarded as part of the RAK Holy Quran Award, 17th edition.

“Up to 56 male and female inmates have performed well in three categories of the annual local competitio­n which is meant to help the RAK prisoners start a new chapter of their life and be good citizens,” said Ahmed Subaian, secretaryg­eneral of the award. “The competitio­n this year has reached out to the inmates of Abu Dhabi and Al Ain prisons,” he added. ahmedshaab­an@khaleejtim­es.com
