— Another community service order! His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE, and Ruler of Dubai, ordered the men involved in the cat cruelty incident to clean Dubai Zoo facilities for four hours daily for three months.

The order came after a video, which took the internet by storm, showed a man feeding his cat alive to wild dogs, in revenge for it eating his chicken and birds.

“Those reckless men committed a crime that was against basic human principles. This brutal and cruel act contravenes our values and the teaching of our tolerant religion, which preaches mercy and welfare for animals,” Sheikh Mohammed said. Dubai Police announced on Tuesday the arrest of a man responsible for the incident.

Abdullah Khalifa Al Marri, Commander-in-chief of Dubai Police, later revealed that a group of three persons, one Emirati and two Bangladesh nationals, were arrested.

He commended Sheikh Mohammed for his order requiring the application of the community service penalty on those involved in the incident. “The order underscores Sheikh Mohammed’s commitment to safeguarding the noble values upon which the UAE citizens were raised. These values promote mercy for animals and denounce all forms of cruelty against animals, ” the Dubai Police chief asserted.

dubai — His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, has ordered the men who were detained for torturing a cat in Dubai, to perform four hours of community service daily by cleaning the Dubai Zoo for three months.

On its Twitter account, the Dubai Media Office noted that “this community service came as a punishment to those irresponsible persons who committed a brutal and barbaric act, which contradicts our values and true Islamic teachings that urge mercy to animals.”

On Tuesday, Major-General Khalil Al Mansouri, Director of CID, confirmed that police arrested a man who posted a horrific video on social media showing him feeding a live cat to dogs, reportedly because the cat ate one of his chickens. Police later noted that a total of three people were arrested — an Emirati and two Bangladeshis who worked with him in the farm

The video sparked widespread outrage across the UAE, with many people taking to Twitter and Facebook to call for severe punishment to be meted out to the culprit.

The latest incident isn’t the first time that Sheikh Mohammed has ordered a novel form of punishment for those who break the law. In February, he ordered that a stunt driver and his friends — who were filmed performing dangerous maneuvers near City Walk — clean Dubai streets four hours a day, for 30 days.

Major-General Abdullah Khalifa Al Marri, Commander-in-Chief of Dubai Police, commended Sheikh Mohammed for the community service penalty he ordered for those involved in the incident.

Commendable punishment

“The order underscores Sheikh Mohammed’s commitment to safeguarding the noble values upon which the UAE citizens were raised. These values promote mercy for animals and denounce all forms of cruelty against animals. This behaviour is completely unacceptable and should not go unpunished,” the Dubai Police chief said.

“Apart from the operating laws on animal welfare, the community service punishment remains an important factor that serves a twopronged approach. First, it makes the perpetrators perform certain duties in service of the community for the violation they committed. Second, the penalty will help spread awareness among the public about the negative consequences of committing such acts. It will also serve as a strong deterrent to anyone considering to commit such acts,” he added.

News about the punishment ordered by Sheikh Mohammed was much appreciated by UAE residents across social media platforms. “Hats off to the team who worked together and caught the person responsible. Kudos,” wrote Facebook user Anish Matthews.

Another Facebook user, Jamal Albalooshi, said: “Imagine everyone going to the zoo just to see the guy’s face,” he wrote. “Now that’s real embarrassment.”
