51 motorbikes impounded in one day

- Ahmed Shaaban

ras al khaimah — The Ras Al Khaimah Police, as part of an intensive traffic campaign, impounded 51 motorbikes in one day for traffic violations.

Col Ali Saeed Al Alkeem, director of traffic and patrols department at the RAK Police, said most of the seized motorbikes were speeding through city streets at night, making loud noise and disturbing the public.

“The young men perform stunts and conduct unauthorised bike races on the streets, putting the safety of other road users at risk and disturbing the peace of other residents. Some of the seized motorbikes were being ridden by unlicensed youth,” said Col Al Akeem.

He said the ‘Eltizam’ or ‘Obligation’ campaign will continue to curb this phenomenon. “A number of accidents have been reported recently due to motorbikes.”

The RAK Police have launched several campaigns to develop the traffic awareness of drivers and parents about the negative impact of traffic accidents and speeding, he added. Col Alkeem said the inspections will continue throughout the year to curb erring drivers. “No vehicle will be released before full payment of set fines at the end of the impoundment period.”

As per the federal traffic law, driving a vehicle on the public road without a number plate draws a fine of Dh1,000, along with 24 black points, he warned.

A few days back, the RAK Municipality announced that it would auction off the unclaimed impounded vehicles, some of which were lying in the impoundment yard for two years.
