Worker stands on trial for stabbing roommate while drinking alcohol

- Marie Nammour

dubai — A construction worker has faced the charges of attempted murder and consuming alcohol in the Dubai Court of First Instance.

The public prosecution accused the 22-year-old Indian man of causing serious injuries to his compatriot after he stabbed him in the abdomen, following an alcoholfuelled verbal brawl. The incident took place on September 11, 2016.

A 37-year-old Indian worker at the same contracting company, who witnessed the incident, said: “I was lying on my bed in the same room as the two others. They were having dinner and drinking liquor.

“I fell asleep when I suddenly woke up to the screams of the victim who was holding his bleeding stomach. He tried to leave the room while the other was trying to stop him.”

The witness heard the accused insulting the victim’s mother while telling him he would not let him go. “I followed them outside where I saw the victim lying down bleeding profusely. The accommodation supervisor had restrained the worker who stabbed him,” he said. Another Indian worker said he was in the same room at the time of the incident. “I woke up to the victim screaming he was stabbed. I saw the victim outside lying down while the accused was looking at him with the knife in his hand.”

A policeman said they reached the labour accommodation in Al Muhaisna shortly before 10pm. “The suspect did not look normal and he was apparently drunk. The knife was dropped in a trash bin.”

A forensic report showed the victim underwent emergency surgeries at a hospital in Dubai.
