Three-year jail for speeding motorist who resisted arrest

dubai — A speeding motorist, who rammed into another car and also assaulted a police officer while resisting arrest, has been given three years in jail.

The Abu Dhabi Criminal Court of First Instance handed down the sentence to the Emirati man after he was found guilty of assaulting a police officer, resisting police arrest, reckless driving and damaging a car after causing an accident.

Official court documents stated that Abu Dhabi Traffic Police patrol officers tried to stop the man in his 20s after they spotted him speeding and driving recklessly on one of Abu Dhabi roads.

The driver allegedly refused to stop and instead increased his speed and drove away. The police patrol car chased him until they found him at a busy traffic signal trying to pass through the traffic jam. When he tried to overtake a car and head to the right in order to escape from the police, the man crashed into the car and damaged it. No one was injured in the crash but the car of the second driver was damaged.

The Emirati got out of the car and tried to run away after seeing the police was still after him.

And when a police officer moved out the patrol car and tried to catch him, the man fought him but the cop overpowered him and had him detained.

Prosecutors charged the young man with reckless driving, damaging a car after causing an accident, assaulting a police officer and resisting police arrest.

The Emirati had denied all the charges throughout his trial but the court convicted him based on the evidence presented by the prosecutors.
