dubai — A cleaner, who stabbed a woman to death after he failed to see his supervisor, the victim’s aunt, was sentenced to 15 years in jail on Sunday. The Court of First Instance convicted him of a murder charge and ordered his deportation after completing his sentence.

The 33-year-old Filipino convict went to his compatriot supervisor’s flat at the Dubai Investment Park (DIP), Jebel Ali, on August 7, 2016, to seek her help over a money-related issue.

The cleaner admitted during investigation that he went to his supervisor’s flat to seek her help in talking to the human resources

section of the hotel where he worked. He wanted the company to waive off the Dh6,000 he owed them. When he reached the flat, the victim opened the door and told him her aunt wasn’t at home then. He barged into the flat’s kitchen and brought out a knife, with which he threatened the victim. They had a fight before he stabbed her in the neck.

The defendant’s supervisor said the victim was looking forward to being a nurse in Abu Dhabi and was to go back to her home country after being approved. “The accused had resigned but he still owed the hotel Dh6,000. I was busy and could not see him on the day of the incident.”

The defendant’s brother said he went outside his building at the DIP around 5.30pm on the day of the incident. “He was shaking as he told me to call the police because he killed someone. As I blamed him for what he did, he told me not to do so and that he was not aware of what he did.”

The forensic report showed the victim died because of a stab wound in the neck. The court verdict may be appealed.
