League should assert moral authority

-

The pursuit of peace has never been so arduous than in the Middle East. There is need for introspection after decades of war and disputes, the chief being the Palestinian struggle for statehood. Their fight is for dignity and the right to exist. The Arab League, at its meeting in Jordan, has put the two-state plan back on track, which is what was expected of the regional grouping. Here is an emotional, core issue that can be solved if the Arab world sticks together for their suffering brethren and gets things done. Too much blood has been shed as a climate of suspicion and fear hovers over the region. The situation in Syria should also make us weep. Iraq’s woes are manifold. The plunder, the killings — the futility of it all.

Unless Arab countries introspect, there can never be true reconciliation among people, sects and communities that share so much but agree on so little in times of crises. How do these countries find solutions when outsiders have dictated the course of events? For most part of modern history after World War II, Western countries like the United States, Britain and France have played the role of mediators and so-called partners in progress. The task of peacemaking and mending bridges was conveniently left to them. Some went on the start wars that have now turned into full-blown sectarian conflicts like in Iraq and Syria.

When the West had enough, enter Russia, that is threatening to shape the course of the region with willing friends in Tehran.

In this bleak scenario, countries like the UAE have proved sustained growth is possible through a culture of tolerance. It’s a delicate balancing act, but is possible with the right leadership. Differences exist, yes, but when differences turn into disputes and then spiral into violence, society is in turmoil. Leaders transform into statesmen when they realise war is not the answer. Statesmen intervene before rows turn deadly.

Meanwhile, conflict fatigue is setting in, helplessness, like in Syria. Refugees from Palestine are our own and deserve a better Arab deal that is inclusive and just. Their destinies should not be left to outside powers. The Arab League should assert its moral authority and restore faith in the Arab way of life that puts peace above all else.
