ras al khaimah — The Federal Electricity and Water Authority, or Fewa, in a bid to ease power overloads and repetitive outages during scorching summer months, is to open two new power substations in Umm Al Quwain in two months.

The two new substations are to be operated at the Umm Al Thaub and Al Suwaihat areas by the end of May this year, according to Mohammed Saleh, director-general of Fewa.

“The new substations, to be operative by the end of May this year, will further decrease the load on the other two power stations in Al Salma and Al Riyadiyah areas.”

The two substations, worth Dh33.3 million each, has a capacity of 75MVA, he elaborated. “The 33/11KV-voltage substations contain three transmitters, six feeders and three switches with each,” he said.

Fewa has paid much attention to the service sector in the northern emirate of Umm Al Quwain in its ongoing and future plans to cope with the incessant spike of the power loads and urban expansion, he added.

“These projects are expected to boost the currently weak performance of the electricity networks across the emirate and that will help meet the annual six per cent hike in residential, commercial and industrial needs of the emirate.” Indicating, he said that Fewa has finished a number of development projects in the first quarter of the year in the emirates of Ajman and Umm Al Quwain.

“We have further completed the studies needed for carrying out a number of new projects which are expected to be done within the coming two years to boost the performance of the water and electricity networks in the northern emirates.”

Few days back, the Authority had started operating the strategic water line between the emirate of Ajman and Umm Al Quwain to better handle emergency cases and secure all the amounts of water need in both emirates. “The 800mm in diametre water pipes, made of elastic iron, were installed over a long distance of 10km against a total value of Dh20 million.”
