36.5% drop in RAK road accident injuries
ras al khaimah — The emirate of Ras Al Khaimah has seen a drop of 35.6 per cent in the number of the people injured in traffic accidents across the emirate, in the first quarter of this year as compared to the same period last year, the police have said.
Official records show that 90 people received minor to medium and serious injuries in the first three months of the year compared to 148 over the same period last year.
Lack of attention on the road, failing to observe the safety space or lane rules and poor overtaking are some of the reasons for these mishaps, according to Major General Ali Abdullah bin Alwan Al Nuaimi, Commander-in-Chief of the RAK Police.
“Driving at a high speed, racing, jumping the red light, reckless driving and sudden tyre bursts are the reasons that are all being addressed to achieve accident-free roads here,” he said.
The significant drop in the accident rate is due to the tireless effort being exerted to develop public awareness and among drivers in particular, to observe traffic rules and respect others’ rights. “The intensive inspection campaigns being deployed day and night across the emirate’s internal and public roads and highways have also helped curb down traffic accidents’ casualties,” Maj Gen Al Nuaimi said.
RAK has further seen a significant drop of 12.5 per cent in the number of traffic accidents deaths.
“Fourteen people were reportedly killed in road accidents in the first three months of this year, compared to 16 people who died over the same period in 2016.”
Warning further, Major-General Al Nuaimi said the RAK police will deploy more inspection patrols across the emirate to control traffic flow and clamp down on reckless drivers.
As per a tougher unified traffic law with higher fines and a black points system enacted in 2008 all over the UAE, erring motorists are penalised with up to 24 black points, following which they lose their driving licence.
