500km federal roads to be LED-lit this year
dubai — The Ministry of Infrastructure Development is all set to replace the traditional streetlights on a stretch of 500km of the total 710km of federal roads with power-saving LEDs.
The new LED lights will reduce power consumption by at least 50 per cent, according to Hussain Al Mansuri, acting undersecretary at the ministry.
The project will be carried out this year in two phases, he stated. “Over 26,300 traditional lamps, consuming 46 megawatts per year, will be replaced with LED lights with 50 per cent drop in power consumption in the first stage of the scheme, spanning 290km.”
In the second phase, LED bulbs will be installed on a stretch of 210km, where up to 4,510 high bay LED bulbs will be fitted., he said, adding that the project will save power and cut down the UAE’s carbon footprint. Al Mansuri pointed out that the installation

All the ministry projects related to the development of federal roads are highly integrated and based on the latest standards of quality, safety and sustainability in view of the UAE Vision 2021.
Ahmed Al Hammadi, manager of roads department, said the ministry had earlier launched the ‘Masar’ or ‘Path’ initiative to better monitor and serve the federal roads to remain the top network worldwide in terms of quality.”
“The ministry is running eight customised vehicles driven by 14 quality controllers, who conduct daily monitoring and patrolling of federal roads to report any damage to asphalt layers, lighting systems, direction signs and safety requirements.”
The ministry has allocated more than Dh150 million yearly for routine maintenance, protection and improvement of the federal road network and related infrastructure, he stated.
“The vehicles operating under the initiative will be connected with a smart system which will send data to the ministry to enable it to take prompt measures to maintain road quality.”
