Build the future by taking part in FNC poll, youth told
dubai — Emirati youth must actively participate in the country’s development through casting their votes in the Federal National Council (FNC) elections, said Dr Anwar bin Mohammed Gargash, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs on Thursday.
Addressing a Youth Circle titled “Political Development in UAE,” he said the youth is the country’s best hope to continue its accelerated development.
Therefore, he noted, acting as ambassadors in the FNC by taking part in the electoral process is essential to start a dialogue about the cultural and social realities of the UAE.
“It is ultimately up to [the youth] to build the future of the UAE, and their participation enriches the parliamentary experience and allows them to choose the candidate who best represents them,” noted Gargash.
Taking part in the elections, he said, allows for a better representation of the people of the UAE and strengthens the sense of patriotism, national duty, and dedication to the public interest.
He highlighted the benefits of political participation either by exercising the right to vote or contesting as a candidate in the election, noting that it is a deeply rooted aspect in the UAE’s cultural heritage.
“Rulers of the emirates are abided by the concept of ‘Shura’, seeking counsel regarding the issues that concern citizens and exploring solutions and policies to meet their political, social and economic needs,” he said. In return, empow- ering the FNC will fully assume its role as a support unit for the executive authorities and create a link with the people.
Gargash emphasised that the youth hold more responsibility than that of previous generations. “Now you have to carry the country’s achievement and transfer the experience to others.” He said such responsibility lies partly on balancing between looking towards the future, while holding on to the country’s legacy.
“The key is balance. We can look at what other countries do and learn from them, but we should also hold on to our past,” he said. To contribute to the country’s development and progress, Gargash noted, young people should delve into the field that interests them most.
“We want the youth to be active in whatever field they like. I always tell young people to read. You should read what you love rather than no read at all.”
He added: “If stars intrigue you, then read about the stars, read

about nature. If you’re knowledgeable about something you love, you’ll be creative at it. This country is like a painting, and once you add your creative colour to it, you’ll contribute to its overall beauty.”
Gargash recalled the three FNC election experiences of 2006, 2011 and 2015, saying they had succeeded in making young people at the heart of the electoral process.
Addressing the FNC’s role in foreign policy, Gargash pointed out that the council strengthened relations with parliamentary bodies around the world and promoted values of tolerance, peace and international cooperation to resolve issues.
