Dewa, Dubai Municipality to mark Earth Day today
dubai — The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa) and the Dubai Municipality (DM) will organise special programmes to mark the World Earth Day today.
The celebrations are aimed at promoting awareness about leading a lifestyle that preserves our planet and protects the environment from direct or indirect damage caused by human activities. Millions of people from more than 180 countries around the world celebrate Earth Day every year, to renew their commitment towards preserving the planet and environment.
“Dubai has become a model for clean and renewable energy, sustainability and green economy. It reduced carbon emissions and introduced sustainable solutions to address climate change and global warming, as outlined in the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050, which aims to provide 7 per cent of Dubai’s total power output from clean energy by 2020, 25 per cent by 2030 and 75 per cent by 2050. The Dewa adopts a strategy to reduce energy demand by 30 per cent by 2030, and reduce carbon emissions by 16 per cent by 2021. It has launched major smart initiatives and projects, most importantly Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, Shams Dubai, as well as smart grids and metres and the Green Charger,” he added.
A fun and educational event will be organised by the Dubai Municipality to mark the occasion. The annual event aims to bring together communities to raise awareness on environmental issues and inspire one another to unite for the planet. This year’s theme centres around educating young people and children on climate and environmental issues, towards a goal that by 2020, all high school graduates have basic climate and environmental literacy.
Alya Al Harmoudi, director of the environment department in the Dubai Municipality, said that Earth Day is a key event on the annual environmental calendar.
“The theme this year is extremely important, as education is central to the future fate of our planet.”
