A whole new reading world
dubai — The Sharjah Children’s Reading Festival — which ends today — has been nothing less than a festival of knowledge for the UAE’s book-loving children, a true celebration of reading and the importance of instilling a love of the written word at an early age.
Starting April 19, the festival — which this year was themed “Discover Beyond” — featured 2,093 cultural, artistic and entertainment activities, with 123 exhibitors and 179 guests, such as notable authors, taking part from across the globe.
Many of the events, of course, centred around young people. An exhibit entitled ‘Brain: the Inside Story’, for example, explained how the organ has evolved and how it works, and including a “brain test run” for children.
Another event — celebrating the 10th birthday of Kalimat Publishing House — included reading sessions, performances and facepainting, as well as educational and recreational workshops.
Just as importantly, many families left the SCRF with dozens of books to be enjoyed by their children for months to come.
It wasn’t, however, all fun and games. The SCRF also included events and programme such as the launch of the ‘How to Say No to Terrorism and Exploitation’ initiative launched at the event by the Sharjah Department of Social Services (DSS), and the social services centre stall.
Ahmed Ibrahim Al Mell, Director of the Government Communications Department at DSS, noted that the initiative is designed as a step-by-step guide to help parents teach children to say ‘no’ when they find themselves in manipulative — and often dangerous — social situations.
