Dubai joins 40 cities to fight climate change
dubai — Dubai has become a member of C40, an elite group of 40 cities across the world leading the way in the field of protection from climate change. This was revealed during a workshop organised by the Dubai Municipality on climate change and ways to reduce its impact.
The membership of Dubai in C40 — represented by the General Secretariat of the Executive Council of Dubai — allows the transfer of knowledge in the field of climate protection and sustainable infrastructure; benefiting from international reports, studies, research and indicator results; and identifying the experiences of successful member cities in mitigation and adaptation.
The workshop was attended by many engineers from several departments in the municipality related to climate change. The workshop gave a broad introduction to climate change and its reasons.
In a paper presented by Ayman Fathi of the environment department, the concept of climate change was explained as “any long-term change with impact in the average weather, including changes in temperature, rainfall and wind conditions”. “These changes may occur due to the dynamic processes of the earth such as volcanoes or external forces such as the intensity of solar radiation or the fall of large meteors or because of human activities,” said Fathi.
The paper also highlighted the Dubai Municipality’s climate change-related activities. These include launching the first corporate policy for climate change at the national level in support of the march of Dubai in its transformation into a green economy.
