IS IT ROBO-MANIA, ROBO-PHOBIA OR MAYDAY?

- — Sabitha Anne Mathew, Dubai

Love it or hate it, you got to live with it. That’s exactly what the ‘smart world’ has done to you.

Every perfect thing is a gift from God. What if all these gifts are used up by a bunch of men with selfish motives? When computers came in, the world rejoiced. What followed was an uncontrollable chain reaction of cyber-bullying, sessions with counsellors and every psychologist in town signalling, Mayday.

Come to think about it, all campaigns on going green, climate control and cyber control are the byproduct of the ‘world rejoicing’.

It’s quite the similar situation I see in robotisation. Of course, it sounds absolutely mind-blowing. When I was young, I would dream about having robots at home who would do all my work (especially homework) while I sat on the couch, watching TV. To imagine the world is actually going to be like that in the near future is rewarding. But, is this going to be another call for Mayday? Are we going to end up with more campaigns on how these robots have taken over our human race and totally destroyed it? If you ask me, I see these so-called robots dominating every aspect of our life very soon.

“Baby, my boss hasn’t approved my leave. Please get married to Mr Robogroom. I am sending him in on the next flight.” Or, “Doc, I hate stretch marks. Please get Ms Robo-mama to deliver the baby for me.”

The Oxfam report shows that, the world’s 62 richest billionaires own as much wealth as the poorer half of the world’s population. From where I see it, the rich are getting richer and the poor all set for doom. They say robots will take over a majority of the working class soon.

But, how exactly are we expected to live without a job? It’s high time we looked into it seriously lest the world starts to cry out Mayday.
