- Ahmed Shaaban

ras al khaimah — The maintenance and development of the iconic Ship Roundabout in Ras Al Khaimah, at the Nadiya area on Sheikh Mohammed bin Salem road, was completed by the department of public works and services. The roundabout, built in the early eighties, was in adverse condition and needed urgent renovation, according to Ahmed Mohammed Al Hammadi, director-general of the department.

“The development works were timely because of the changes introduced to the entries and exits of the roads leading to the roundabout. The renovation is a part of the project to double the roads leading to the major Corniche Al Qawasim Road which was completed recently. The one-way road was expanded for the convenience of schools located on the roads and to boost traffic flow on main roads of the emirate.

“The department is revamping the roads while renovating the Corniche Al Qawasim pathway in different phases so as not to affect the users of the busy walkway.”

Al Hammadi said they had tried to retain the shape of the roundabout. “The symbol of the roundabout, the ship, was retained and the area around was revamped

using innovative engineering systems. The engineering shapes have been done in a lower level so as not to block the visibility of drivers and users.

“The department has finished the development works of the sewage network from the Post Signal to the Ship Roundabout and the roads are being built using new interlocks. The road that connects the Ship Roundabout and Corniche Al Qawasim at the Dahan area will be developed into a two-lane route.

“The department and the traffic department of RAK police are working on a comprehensive study for developing all the roads of the emirate of Ras Al Khaimah. These mainly include the road under the Cove Rotana Bridge leading to the Dheit area and Wakalat road which are always busy, he added. ahmedshaaban@khaleejtimes.com
