Wear proper gear to avoid getting into trouble

-

One way to lose a bicycle is by not following the safety guidelines implemented by authorities. Many cyclists around Dubai can be seen riding around without a helmet, reflective vest, or even lights. This results in many bicycles being impounded and the owners fined.

This is not only a hassle for cyclists, but also a loss of their investment. This can be disastrous for the riders especially as many of them ride along roads. Many cycling clubs around Dubai advocate for proper road safety and even educate new cyclists about the rules of the road. Foldubs, a folding bike group have a “no gear, no ride” policy in place, therefore barring riders who violate safety guidelines.

Getting the proper safety gear is quite easy in the UAE. A good helmet could cost as low as Dh49, whilst safety vests are only Dh15. These safety vests have reflectors so that when lights are directed toward them, they illuminate the rider. This is important for cyclists who go out during the night. Another aspect of safety are lights. Authorities encourage cyclists to have both front and rear lights for added visibility. Lack of any one of these could be grounds for a fine or worse — getting your bike impounded.
