dubai — Eman Abdul Atti, once billed as the world’s heaviest woman, is now able to take food through her mouth for the first time in three months, according to doctors at Burjeel Hospital in Abu Dhabi, where she has been treated since being airlifted from India on May 5.

“We started with few spoons every day, now achieving 15 spoons and expected to be twice per day soon,” read a joint statement issued by Dr Yassin Al Shahat, the CMO of Burjeel Hospital, Dr Nehad Halawa, head of the treatment team, and Eman’s sister Shaima Abdul Atti.

The statement also noted that Eman’s mother had arrived from Egypt, and “she was impressed by the good changes that has happened to her daughter’s health since her arrival from India”.

abu dhabi — Eman Abdul Atti, once considered the world’s heaviest woman and now under treatment in Abu Dhabi, is able to take food by mouth for the first time in three months, according to doctors.

The improvement is significant for the bed-ridden Egyptian woman, who reportedly weighed 176kg when she was airlifted from Mumbai’s Saifee Hospital to Abu Dhabi on May 5 for further treatment.

“We started with a few spoons per day, now achieving 15 spoons. The other good news is that since the last two days, Eman has been taking half her meals by herself,” read a joint statement issued by Dr Yassin Al Shahat, CMO of Burjeel Hospital; Dr Nehad Halawa, head of the treating team; and Shaima Abdul Ati, Eman’s sister.

This is the second medical update from Burjeel Hospital since Eman’s arrival to the UAE capital.

The statement also said that Eman’s mother arrived in the UAE from Egypt on May 28, and “she was impressed by the changes in her daughter’s health condition since her arrival from India”.

Her doctors also claimed that Eman has achieved “significant improvement” in her psychological condition and is reacting positively to surroundings. “We can see her smiling, watching TV and communicating with visitors. Her speech and voice are clearing steadily.”

According to them, since the last two weeks, Eman has also started some movement in the lower limbs, which had been inactive since she had a stroke two years ago.

“The power in her right arm is becoming almost normal. She is able to sustain sitting positions in the bed unsupported for a short time span of 10 to 15 minutes,” read the statement.

Eman’s bedsores have also improved under the supervision of a consultant plastic surgeon. “She is losing weight steadily using strict low-calorie diet under the supervision of a dietician.”
