Explore Islamic science, art at exhibit

-

For an enlightening journey into Islam’ Golden Ages, head to The Dubai Mall for 9Hijri, an exhibition highlighting the contributions of Islamic scholars and master craftsmen. With the long nights of Ramadan often ending in Dubai’s cavernous shopping malls, why not combine an evening of food and shopping with time spent learning?

The exhibition — which will run throughout Ramadan — has nine dedicated zones that pay tribute to Islamic scholars and veterans.

The ‘Knowledge Zone’, for example, brings visitors into the ‘House of Wisdom’ by documenting the collective knowledge of rare Islamic manuscripts, books and studies, which helped pave the way for a new era of cultural understanding.

Another area — the ‘Film Zone’ — shows a selection of short films by leading Arab and Muslim directors, each one of which displays Arab talent, while the ‘Literature Zone’ brings to life the rich history of Arabic literature, from the Golden Age of Baghdad to poetry nights in the gardens of Al Andalus. Among those present will be Emirati authors Alia Al Shamsi and Omar Ghobash.

A particularly fascinating part of the exhibit is the “Science Zone”, which delves into the Islamic World’s contributions to astronomy, physics and chemistry, and also includes contributions from the Dubai Astronomy Group and video displays about science, along with Google Cardboard and Oculus stargazing apps.

Other attractions include the “Design Zone”, which unravels the artistic brilliance of intricate geometric patterns, as well as Islamic designs that showcase the traditional usage of geometry in art. The “Art Zone” focuses on Islamic handicrafts and art, and visitors can also take part in workshops on calligraphy, painting and ceramics. The standalone “Calligraphy Zone” features a gallery of much-prized classic and contemporary work.

Additionally, the exhibit boasts a “Fashion Zone” and a “Numeric Zone”, which presents the scientific genius of Al Khwarizmi, Al Kindi and Al Misri, who shaped our modern understanding of mathematics and algebra. From addition, subtraction, multiplication and division to extracting the root to the very concept of zero, the Zone — located right at the Grand Entrance of the mall — has an iconic art installation that honours the Islamic world’s contribution to mathematics. The exhibition is open 10 AM to 3 AM, every day throughout Ramadan.
