Man sells off woman’s villa without her approval

- Ismail Sebugwaawo

abu dubai — A man stood trial at an Abu Dhabi court for selling off a woman’s villa, which was valued at Dh3 million, without her consent.

The Abu Dhabi court heard that the Emirati woman had given power of attorney to the man from a GCC nation to manage her villa, as she was too busy with other works, including public duties.

The woman trusted the man as he had been treating her ‘possessed son’ for more than four months at her home. The man won the trust of the woman after knowing that she did not have many relatives around her and her husband rarely visited her, as he had a second wife.

After obtaining the general power of attorney from the woman, the suspect allegedly disappeared and also switched off his mobile phone. Later the woman found out that her villa had been sold to someone and the money was deposited in the defendant’s bank account.

The woman filed a complaint against the man and the police arrested him. The defendant denied the charge of fraud and told the court the woman wanted him to sell the villa and clear the debts owed to her husband.

He said the woman’s husband was in transport business and owed money to several car dealers. The defendant claimed that he used the cash to pay her husband’s debts. He also denied that he was treating the couple’s son and stressed that he got in relationship with the family because of her husband’s dealings with the car companies.

The husband refuted the man’s claims about clearing his debts with car dealers stressing that he came to know about him when he started treating his son. He told court that the defendant had exploited his wife, by deceiving her into accepting to manage her villa and consequently defrauded her. The trial was adjourned until June 6.
