dubai — Many students in the UAE achieved a cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 10 in their Class 10 Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) exams.

Out of the 728 students who took the exam at the Indian High School (IHS) Dubai, 148 scored A1 grade in all five subjects, with a CGPA of 10. Students at the IHS with the perfect score of 10 were ecstatic with their results.

Hemang Dash, 15, said he studied five to six hours on weekdays and more than eight hours on weekends to prepare for the examinations.

“I studied really hard for these exams, but the papers turned out to be easier than I expected. I was telling my mum that she didn’t have to worry. I told her I would pass for sure and receive a CGPA of 10. We don’t get separate marks for each subject but I think I probably scored the highest in Maths,” he said. “My family was so proud of me when they saw the results. I studied really hard, so I expected to recieve this CGPA.”

However, not all students who earned a CGPA of 10 claimed to have studied as hard as Dash did. One student, Anagha Savit, 15, said she spent her time doing extracurricular activities along with studying, as she felt it was “absolutely necessary”.

“I didn’t study for a specific number of hours. I understood the concept, so I studied what I needed to know,” she said, adding that she was surprised to see the CGPA she had received. “I did expect those numbers, and I am still surprised.”

Athulya Ganesh, 16, said she wouldn’t have received a CGPA of 10 if she didn’t get the support of her family and teachers. Ganesh studied eight hours every day and kept her nose in the books throughout the year to prepare for the exams.

“I feel I worked really hard for the exams. I felt so happy when I saw my results,” said Ganesh, who wants to pursue a career in the field of science.

Dr Ashok Kumar, CEO of IHS, said: “Congratulations to all students, staff and parents for the superb results. We are now reverting to the previous assessment pattern. I would like to tell all the students to reach for the stars. With the correct attitude, nothing is impossible. I’m sure our students will continue to do us proud with their perseverance and hard work.”

Students in other schools also did well, with many scoring a CGPA of 9 or higher. At Delhi Private School in Dubai, the CBSE Grade 10 class average was announced as 9.1. A total of 29.7 per cent of the Grade 10 students at the school received a perfect CGPA of 10.

“We take great pride in our students results, particularly because we have seen that there is an increase of 10 per cent in the number of students getting a score of perfect CGPA 10,” Rashmi Nandkeolyar, principal and director of the school, said. At GEMS CBSE schools, more than 600 students received a CGPA of 10.

“Success is no accident. It is hard work, perseverance, sacrifice and putting in long hours of study. We congratulate our GEMS Grade 10 pupils who have done exceedingly well,” said Michael Guzder, vice-president of Indian schools at the GEMS Education.
