UAE FRAMEWORK

-

abu dhabi — The UAE said on Tuesday that Qatar would need to provide a ‘guaranteed roadmap’ before it would consider mending ties.

“We need a guaranteed roadmap to rebuild confidence after our covenants were broken,” Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Anwar Gargash said on Twitter.

Gargash accused Doha of turning to “money and media and partisanship and extremism” in a series of tweets. Qatar has denied the allegations.

Commenting on the Arab decision to cut ties with Qatar, Gargash called it “a difficult and critical day, and a culmination of years of incitement”.

“The decision of brotherly countries came after years of advice and patience. How we have wished the voice of reason and wisdom would prevail, instead of obstinacy.”

Explaining why the UAE preferred to stand by Saudi Arabia over the chaos, Gargash said: “We chose honesty, transparency and stability over chaos; we chose moderation and development, we chose confidence and clarity, and we chose King Salman and Saudi Arabia.”

Gargash said the policy of money, media and bidding over sectarianism and extremism proved to be a failure. A solution lies in changing the inciting and harmful behaviour.”

He rejected the question of “sovereignty” or “independence” in severing ties with Qatar.

“The issue does not revolve around sovereignty and independence; it is rather the rejection of a policy that harms brothers and undermines the security and stability of the Arabian Gulf. We cannot all be wrong.”

“The brother believed that obstinacy and high media din will gloss over the crisis, without realising that the solution lies in wisdom and changing the behaviour that hurt the neighbours.”

Gargash noted that the current crisis is centred on the nature of relationship between the allies and their choice of transparency, honesty, besides defining a clear definition of a lasting friendship.

“Can the brother change this behaviour, and learn to keep promises? Will the brother be keen on maintaining the brotherhood and being a partner for better or for worse: This is the simple framework for a solution.” —
