Gang offering car lifts to snatch cash busted
sharjah — The Sharjah Police arrested a three-member African gang who plundered money from people after offering them car lift services and driving them to isolated areas.
The gang members amassed a total of Dh35,400 from several victims in the Central Region resorting to such tricks and swindling methods.
When the victims accept lift offer from them, they would be taken to deserted areas along the highways, where one of the suspects would suddenly scream and claim that his wallet had been stolen.
Then the group would ask the victims to check if his money was safe and while they check the wallets, they then snatch it and ask to get out of the car.
Major Mohamed Al Qabed Al Tunaigi, director of criminal investigation of Sharjah Police, said that Al Dhaid Police Station received a number of complaints from victims, who were mainly targeted on the highways.
He said that the suspects took Dh26,000 from one of the victims and Dh9,400 from another. A Criminal Investigation Department security team was formed

to investigate the case which ended in the arrest of the gang. One of the victims identified the member, he added.
The three-member gang also confessed to similar robberies in other emirates. The three suspects were detained and referred to the public prosecutors.
Colonel Ahmed Mohamed bin Darwish, director of the Central Region at Sharjah Police, said the gang members were all African nationals and they entered the UAE several times before using tourist visas. He added that the suspects carried out their robberies using rented cars.
