Seek treatments to curb symptoms of PCOS

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) is a condition that causes irregular menstrual periods with excessive facial and body hair growth, acne, and/or male pattern scalp hair thinning. One in every 10 women is affected and many of them tend to be overweight or obese and may find it difficult to conceive, said Dr Vandana Waghaye, specialist obstetrician & gynaecologist from PrimaCare Specialty Clinic.

“PCOS is also associated with a higher risk of developing diabetes, hyperlipidemia, and sleep apnea,” she said.

PCOS is not an entirely curable condition, but the symptoms can definitely be reduced with a number of treatments that can help in leading a normal life.

Dr Vaishali Srinivas Joshi, specialist gynaecologist, said though the exact cause is not known, hormonal imbalances and genetics play a major role in the development of PCOS. “Women are more prone to develop PCOS if they have a family history.

“If you are overweight or obese, losing at least five to 10 per cent of your weight can improve many of the symptoms of PCOS like getting regular periods and improving your chances of getting pregnant. If the periods are still irregular after weight loss, your doctor can help with certain medications to regularise periods and keep the blood sugar levels normal. Certain hormonal treatments will also be required to keep the abnormal hair growth and acne at bay.

Always keep your morale high and don’t lose hope as it may be a while before you lose weight, and have regular periods while trying for pregnancy.”
